The forest in climate change
Causes
Forest extinction can be caused by a variety of factors, including air pollution, acid rain, climate change, insect infestation, diseases and human activities such as deforestation and land-use changes.
Climate change
In particular, the changed temperatures and precipitation patterns can affect the growth of trees making them more susceptible to diseases and pest infestation. Estimates suggest that four out of five trees are now sick and suffering from chronic climate stress.
Countermeasures
In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the promotion of resilient tree species and the increased reforestation and protection of forests is becoming increasingly important.
