THE FOREST: OUR LIFELINE IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE

Challenges and
Solutions

Climate change has diverse and profound impacts on our forests. Higher temperatures and drought stress increase the risk of tree damage and death, compromising the ability of forests to sequester carbon and help mitigate global warming.

The composition of tree species changes because some species are better adapted to the new conditions than others. Some specialized species adapted to specific climatic conditions may disappear, reducing biodiversity.

Higher temperatures and drought also increase the frequency and intensity of forest fires.

ERHALT UND FÖRDERUNG VON MISCHWÄLDERN

Building climate-resilient forests requires forestry measures aimed at improving the adaptive capacity and resilience of forest ecosystems. These include:

Promoting the natural regeneration of forests

Implementation of targeted afforestation and reforestation projects

Implementation of sustainable forest management practices

Strengthening forest fire prevention and fighting

Protection and restoration of soil quality and structure

Use of soil-conserving harvesting methods

Promoting biodiversity by protecting habitat diversity

Development and promotion of agroforestry systems for the synergy of agriculture and forestry

Creation and maintenance of buffer zones and protected areas

Adaptation of management plans to changing climate conditions

Adaptation of tree species selection to future climate conditions

THE PROBLEM:

There are fewer and fewer tree species that are flexible enough to survive climate change. Trees planted now for reforestation must be able to withstand both current and future conditions. This means they must be able to withstand the wet, cold and frost of the coming years, and also cope with a much warmer climate and drought towards the end of the century.

Studies show that in Europe, between a third and a half of tree species will no longer be able to cope with the climatic conditions by the end of the century, depending on the region.

At the same time, newly planted tree species must be economically attractive for the forestry industry. European forests naturally contain fewer tree species than those in climatically comparable areas of North America and East Asia. Climate change is now limiting this species pool even more.

As the species pool shrinks, the development of natural, species-rich and climate-resilient mixed forests is at risk. This has negative effects on wood production, carbon storage and the conservation of biodiversity.

One solution to the problem of the shrinking species pool of climate-resilient tree species lies in planting non-native tree species that are also economically attractive.

MISSION

Project Forest: Working together to ensure our future

At a time when climate change is progressing inexorably and nature is coming under increasing pressure, it is time for us to act.

Together we can achieve a lot: from reforestation projects to maintaining and protecting existing forests and raising public awareness of the importance of these green lungs of our planet. This is the only way we can ensure that our forests are preserved for future generations.

Let us protect the forest and give it the recognition and respect it deserves. Every tree we plant, every forest we protect is a step in the right direction towards a sustainable and livable future.
